Planting Native Fruit Trees

Chokecherry trees from NM State Forestry

Some of the Chokecherries had incredible root systems. These two are going to get planted in the ground somewhere, probably trade for smaller trees of different species.

Chickens Don't Just Make Eggs...

...they also make manure.

We are amending the soon to be herb garden with a mixture of straw, manure and half broken down food scraps. This is a very rich mix and helps hold water as well as bring nutrients to the soil. We are still building up this garden (the one we buried pots in last year and grew chiles) We are planning on planting mostly perennial herbs here.

This blog is going multi-media. I fed the pig some kitchen scraps this afternoon and brought along the video camera. I am told she will be ready for slaughter ever sooner that originally thought. Good stuff.

sunflowers!

Here are the mammoth sunflower seedlings that are supposed to grow to seven to ten feet tall. They will have large heads the size of a steering wheel that produce many seeds good for roasting or birdseed. Single flower per plant and from what I hear the stalks are supposed to be self supporting. I thought for sure I would need to stake them, but am trying desperately to not buy anymore t-posts or anything for that matter.
